Justin Trop, MD, MSc

PGY-4, Psychiatry, Emory School of Medicine, Co-Chief of Emory Psychiatry Ambulatory Services

Justin Trop, MD, MSc, is a senior psychiatry resident at Emory, currently rotating with the Departments Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program. He has a strong interest in psychedelics and spirituality, in particular regarding the ways in which psychedelic experiences shape individualsnarratives relating to themselves, others, the world, and our existence, including meaning and purpose. In this context he has curiosity about psychological change processes in psychedelic medicine, and he is currently collaborating with other ECPS colleagues to pilot an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-informed process group for past participants in psychedelic studies at Emory.

Along with ACT, Dr. Trop is actively training and receiving supervision in various psychotherapeuticmodalities, including existential-humanistic, psychodynamic, emotionally focused, and couples & family therapy. He also has experience with cognitively-based compassion training, cognitive behavioral therapy, prolonged exposure therapy for PTSD, systems-centered theory, and exposure and response prevention. He sees psychotherapy and psychedelics as intimately linked and part of integrative psychiatry: an approach to mental health that emphasizes the integration of nutrition, exercise, lifestyle, sleep, social connectedness, spirituality, and holistic well-being.

In addition to his interests in psychedelics, Dr. Trop comes to the world of psychiatry with a background in global health, which has informed his holistic approach to understanding mental health and promoting well-being, including social and cultural dimensions. During his time in residency, he has pursued the residencys Global Mental Health Track in addition to serving as a Chief Resident for Outpatient Psychotherapy and Psychopharmacology Clinic, a position involving coordinating the resident psychotherapy program, providing peer psychotherapy supervision to junior residents, and creating educational opportunities. Moving into the future, he is interested in outpatient integrative psychiatry practice.
